Northwest Day Two

The second day was spent mostly in Kalbarri National Park. In the morning we stopped to look over the ocean cliffs at Natural Bridge. Then we spent time hiking before lunch to Hawks Head lookout and then climbed down into Murchison River Gorge. Much of the terrain reminded me a lot of Southern Colorado, where my family has land. It has been a bit freaky to be in a place that, in a way, feels a bit like home! In the afternoon, we stopped at a very special (although un-glamorous) site to view the Hamelin Pool stromatolites. They are explained in the picture of the interpretation plaque below. It was a crazy concept to think about, even though it wasn't very interesting or particularly beautiful to look at. We went on to Hamelin Station to set up camp for the night. It was a great place to stay with access to a full kitchen and outdoor eating area. We took full advantage of the barbecue to make an Australian favorite: steaks and sausages with smashed potatoes.
